KCAD’S PAMELLA ROLAND DEVOS SCHOOL OF FASHION PRESENTS
2019 CAPSTONE FASHION SHOW

PRESS RELEASE — Students in Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University's (KCAD's) Pamella Roland DeVos School of Fashion will present “Joy,” the KCAD Fashion Studies program’s 2019 Capstone Fashion Show, at Grand Rapids’ Goei Center (818 Butterworth St SW). This event is free and open to the public. General admission tickets can be reserved via Eventbrite.

This fun and eclectic presentation is appropriate for all ages, and will provide a close-up look at unique garments designed and produced exclusively by KCAD Fashion Studies students. The runway will feature both cohesively themed collections of garments from the program’s 10 graduating seniors—known as capstone collections—and undergraduate works responding to the question, “What brings you joy?” Each design is informed by innovative techniques, diverse perspectives, and a wide range of materials, from high-end textiles to commonly recycled materials repurposed for fashion design.

On display will be collections reflecting a diverse range of inspiration, from music, ‘90s streetwear and African cultures to Michigan beaches and lakeshores.

What’s more, every aspect of the event is collaboratively planned and executed by the students themselves. Through immersive experiences like this, KCAD’s Pamella Roland DeVos School of Fashion empowers students to pursue careers in the fashion industry by cultivating their critical thinking and design skills while broadening their understanding of fashion retailing, sustainability, and presentation. As they progress through the program, students also have the opportunity to connect to the heart of the fashion industry through travel experiences and the option to apply to spend a year studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

“It’s critical that our students have opportunities to refine their ideas, processes, and people skills in real-world settings,” said Fashion Studies Program Chair Lori Faulkner. “The Capstone Fashion Show offers that tangible experience while also helping students learn how to not just discover their own identity as designers, but to communicate that identity effectively to an audience as well.”

“The accomplishments of KCAD students are on full display in this annual show, one of the college’s premiere events,” adds Dean of Academic Affairs Charles Wright. “KCAD Fashion Studies graduates have gone on to pursue exciting careers everywhere from bespoke tailors to large international companies. We congratulate this year’s graduates on their achievements and look forward to seeing their next steps.”

“Joy” will offer attendees the immersive experience and high energy of a fashion show, as well as opportunities to mingle with industry professionals, the student designers, and other fashion-savvy attendees. The event is made possible through the generous support of Pamella Roland DeVos and the Daniel and Pamela DeVos Foundation.
